Chapter 35 - The Archivist Arrives

The glowing green dot moved steadily across the floor plan.
No hesitation.
No detours.
Whoever it represented knew every corridor of Section Thirteen by heart.
Margaret folded Eleanor's letter and slipped it carefully into her coat pocket.
"No more hiding," she said quietly.
Daniel looked toward the only entrance.
"If it's really Eleanor..."
Arthur interrupted him.
"Then we listen before we ask questions."
The computerized voice echoed again.
Registered Archivist arriving.
The heavy door unlocked with a soft hiss.
Footsteps approached at an unhurried pace.
An elderly woman entered the archive wearing a dark blue coat and carrying a leather satchel that looked decades old. Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head, and round glasses rested low on her nose.
Margaret stared.
The woman looked familiar...
But she wasn't Eleanor.
She smiled warmly.
"I've waited a very long time to meet all of you."
Arthur frowned.
"You aren't the Archivist we've been following."
"No."
She placed the satchel gently onto the table.
"I am the Keeper before the Archivist."
Rebecca exchanged confused glances with Helen.
"The Keeper?"
The woman nodded.
"Every Archivist inherits the responsibility from a Keeper. Eleanor inherited it from me."
Margaret stepped forward.
"You know my sister?"
"I trained her."
The room fell silent.
The woman slowly removed an old photograph from her satchel.
It showed herself standing beside Eleanor, Samuel Whitmore, and Margaret's late husband.
Taken only eight years earlier.
Margaret felt her knees weaken.
"My husband..."
"...was here."
The Keeper nodded sadly.
"Long after the world believed he had retired."
Before anyone could ask another question, she added softly,
May you like
"And no... his greatest secret was never the Foundation."
