Chapter 20 - Section Thirteen

Daniel thrust his arm between the closing elevator doors.
The brass panels hesitated for a brief second before sliding open again with a soft mechanical hum.
"No alarms," Arthur observed quietly. "Whoever designed this expected someone to hesitate."
Margaret stepped inside first.
She had spent too many years allowing fear to make decisions for her. If Eleanor had sacrificed decades protecting the truth, Margaret refused to stop now.
The elevator contained no buttons.
Instead, twelve brass symbols circled the walls, each matching one of the Custodian families engraved in the archive above.
Beneath them was one final symbol that none of them recognized.
A compass surrounded by thirteen tiny stars.
Rebecca carefully opened the envelope they had found on the floor.
Inside rested a folded blueprint.
Unlike every map they had discovered so far, this one extended far beyond the lighthouse tunnels.
Section Thirteen wasn't another archive.
It was an entire underground complex stretching beneath the coastline.
Laboratories.
Meeting halls.
Dormitories.
Communication rooms.
Even an underground harbor connected directly to the sea.
Arthur stared at the blueprint in disbelief.
"The Foundation never built this."
Helen slowly shook her head.
"No... something much older did."
The elevator descended far longer than expected.
One minute.
Then two.
By the third minute, Margaret realized they were traveling far below the tunnels they had already explored.
When the doors finally opened, clean white lights illuminated a corridor untouched by dust.
Everything appeared maintained.
Fresh paint.
Working ventilation.
Polished floors.
Someone had been living here.
Recently.
At the end of the corridor stood a digital display glowing softly.
WELCOME, CUSTODIAN SUCCESSORS
Beneath the message another line appeared.
FINAL EVALUATION HAS NOT YET BEGUN.
May you like
None of them noticed the small security camera silently tracking every movement they made.
