Chapter 33 - The Fourth Letter

Beyond the memory chamber stood a narrow archive containing only one cabinet.

Unlike every cabinet they had opened before, this one required no key.

Its drawer slid open as Margaret approached.

Inside rested four envelopes.

Three had already been opened.

The fourth remained sealed.

Across the front was written:

Open only after entering the Corridor of Echoes.

Margaret carefully unfolded the letter.

The handwriting belonged to Eleanor.

Margaret,

If you've reached this point, then you've already discovered that memories can be preserved... and they can also be edited.

Everything you've seen so far is genuine.

But it is not complete.

Arthur lowered his head.

"I feared that."

Margaret continued reading.

Years ago, someone successfully removed one event from every official record inside the archive.

Photographs were altered.

Journals were rewritten.

Witnesses remembered different versions.

Rebecca looked stunned.

"Someone changed history."

Eleanor's letter continued.

I spent forty years searching for the missing event.

I found traces everywhere...

...but never the memory itself.

Daniel searched inside the envelope again.

A folded photograph slipped onto the floor.

The image showed twelve Custodian families gathered outside the lighthouse.

Everyone smiled toward the camera.

Except one young woman.

She looked directly behind the photographer.

Fear filled her face.

Margaret enlarged the image with a magnifying lens resting inside the cabinet.

Far in the background...

Barely visible...

A thirteenth person stood among the trees.

Watching.

Not participating.

Arthur whispered,

"So the Thirteenth wasn't a place."

Helen slowly nodded.

May you like

"It was a person."
