Chapter 22 - The Library Without Books

Following signs marked "Research Wing," the group entered a room unlike any library Margaret had ever imagined.

Thousands of shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.

Yet none contained books.

Instead, every shelf held locked metal cases.

Each case bore a family name.

Some names repeated across generations.

Others appeared only once.

Daniel selected a case labeled "Ellis."

It opened automatically.

Inside rested hundreds of audio cassettes, photographs, property deeds, handwritten letters, school certificates, newspaper clippings, and home movies.

It wasn't merely an archive.

It was the complete documented history of their family.

Rebecca found another case labeled "Brooks."

She opened it cautiously.

Her childhood artwork lay inside.

Birthday cards.

Medical records.

Even a broken necklace she had lost at twelve years old.

"How is this possible?" she whispered.

Helen looked equally disturbed.

"I never gave these to anyone."

Arthur scanned the remaining shelves.

"They collected everything."

Margaret walked slowly along the endless rows.

One cabinet stopped her in her tracks.

It carried no surname.

Only a simple brass plaque.

Unknown Descendants

The lock clicked open by itself.

Inside rested dozens of recent files.

The newest had been created only three weeks earlier.

Margaret opened the first folder.

Her own photograph stared back at her.

Taken from across the street while she watered her garden.

The next folder contained Daniel.

The next...

Rebecca.

The next...

Their granddaughter.

Every movement.

Every school event.

Every birthday.

Documented.

Observed.

For years.

Rebecca slammed the folder shut.

"They weren't preserving history."

"They were still building it."

Before anyone could respond, a child's laughter echoed faintly through the ventilation system.

Every adult froze.

May you like

There should have been no one else in the facility.
