Chapter 27 - The Chase Beneath the Coast

Nobody waited for another explanation.

Daniel sprinted from the theater first, clutching the blueprint.

Arthur followed close behind while Helen studied every directional marker carved into the walls.

Margaret's heart pounded as they hurried through corridors that seemed older than the rest of the facility.

The architecture changed.

Modern lighting disappeared.

Stone replaced polished concrete.

The temperature dropped noticeably.

"This section predates the Foundation," Arthur observed.

Rebecca pointed toward faded symbols carved into the walls.

"They aren't English."

Helen examined them.

"Neither are they maritime markings."

The tunnel split into three separate passages.

Above each entrance hung an old brass sign.

North Records.

Observation Wing.

Vault Zero.

Daniel chose the third without hesitation.

Halfway down the passage they discovered fresh evidence.

A flashlight still glowing.

A pair of reading glasses resting on a stone ledge.

A notebook left open.

Margaret picked it up.

The final handwritten sentence read:

If Eleanor reached Vault Zero before us, then she finally decided the family was ready.

No signature.

No date.

Just those words.

A distant door slammed somewhere ahead.

Everyone stopped.

Footsteps echoed through the tunnel.

Not running.

Walking.

Steady.

Confident.

Margaret called into the darkness.

"Eleanor!"

The footsteps paused.

For several long seconds, absolute silence filled the passage.

Then a familiar voice answered from beyond the next stone archway.

"I've been waiting for you."

Margaret rushed forward.

But when the family reached the archway, the corridor beyond was empty.

Only a single lantern burned quietly beside another sealed door.

Across the ancient stone was engraved one final inscription:

ONLY THE FAMILY MAY DECIDE WHAT THE WORLD REMEMBERS.
