Chapter 16 - The Empty Chair

The tactical convoy arrived just after sunset.
Warehouse 12 looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusted loading docks.
Overgrown weeds pushing through cracked concrete.
Officer Hale signaled for silence.
Two entry teams surrounded the building while a drone quietly lifted into the air.
"Thermal scan?"
The operator frowned.
"I've got one heat signature."
"Only one?"
"That's all."
The steel doors were breached.
Police flooded inside.
"Clear!"
"Left side clear!"
"Office clear!"
The warehouse echoed with their voices.
Detective Ortega hurried toward a small room matching the photograph.
"There!"
The folding chair.
The fluorescent light.
The newspaper.
Everything matched.
Except Hannah.
She was gone.
The ropes still lay on the floor.
Officer Hale touched them.
Still warm.
"They moved her recently."
The evidence team began processing the room.
Coffee cups.
Plastic food containers.
Fresh tire marks outside.
Someone had occupied the building for several days.
Then Officer Brooks noticed something taped beneath the chair.
"Marcus."
He carefully removed the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
You're finally asking the right questions.
Nothing else.
No signature.
No fingerprints.
Detective Ortega searched the room once more before stopping beside a wall map.
Colored pins covered nearly every neighborhood in the city.
Each pin carried a small numbered tag.
Rachel's apartment.
Lincoln Elementary.
The courthouse.
The storage facility.
The abandoned warehouse.
Even Police Headquarters.
Officer Hale slowly realized what he was looking at.
"They've been tracking us."
A heavy silence settled across the room.
Then the drone operator's voice crackled over the radio.
"Multiple vehicles approaching from the east."
"Police?"
"No."
"How many?"
"Six."
Every detective instinctively reached for their radios.
May you like
The investigation had just become an ambush.
