Chapter 22 - The Forgotten Detective
The Historical Archives eventually located one surviving personnel file that had escaped deletion because it had been stored off-site during a courthouse renovation.
Inside was Thomas Hale's retirement interview.
Except...
He had never retired.
Marcus carefully opened the scanned transcript.
The final page was missing, but one paragraph remained intact.
> "If anything happens to me, reopen the family trafficking investigation. They're hiding behind legal custody cases."
Rachel looked confused.
"Family trafficking?"
Detective Ortega frowned.
"That term doesn't fit ordinary custody disputes."
Marcus continued reading.
His father's notes mentioned repeated emergency removals of children, falsified court documents, anonymous financial transfers, and unexplained adoptions that bypassed standard review procedures.
The report ended abruptly.
No conclusion.
No suspects.
Only one handwritten sentence circled in red ink.
Follow the coordinators—not the parents.
Marcus slowly looked toward the whiteboard where investigators had connected dozens of names with red string.
Daniel Whitmore.
Eric Whitmore.
Steven Marshall.
Attorney Melissa Grant.
Judge Richard Lawson.
Every one of them...
A coordinator.
Not necessarily the mastermind.
Detective Ortega suddenly walked toward the evidence shelf.
"The notebook."
She retrieved the ledger recovered from Warehouse 12.
Every victim had been assigned a letter.

T.
Some had green checkmarks.
Others carried the word CLOSED.
Rachel's page had something different.
Across the top someone had written in thick black ink:
TRANSFER FAILED
Rachel felt her heart race.
"What was supposed to be transferred?"
Nobody knew.
But everyone realized the wording was deliberate.
Not custody.
Not paperwork.
Transfer.
Marcus quietly closed his father's file.
"My father wasn't investigating a divorce scheme."
He looked toward Ortega.
