Chapter 47 - The Missing Photograph

Kevin carefully examined the empty space on the investigation board.
"There was definitely a photograph here."
Marcus looked at the faded outline left on the cork.
"It wasn't removed recently."
"No."
Kevin adjusted a forensic light.
"The paper aged in place."
Rachel noticed something almost invisible beneath the pinholes.
"There's writing."
Ortega illuminated the area with ultraviolet light.
A hidden note slowly appeared.
> Do not trust the first photograph you find.
Marcus frowned.
"First photograph?"
Kevin searched every recovered evidence box from Thomas Hale's office.
There were hundreds of photographs.
Crime scenes.
Court hearings.
Parking lots.
Secret meetings.
Then one envelope immediately stood out.
Across the front, Thomas had written only one word.
FALSE
Inside were six photographs.
Each showed the same group of people standing outside a courthouse.
Judge Lawson.
Elizabeth Ashcroft.
Harold Marshall.
Thomas Hale.
Exactly like the image they had recovered earlier.
Except...
Every version was slightly different.
Different people stood in the background.
Cars had changed positions.
Shadows fell in impossible directions.
Rachel looked at Marcus.
"They're fake."
Kevin nodded.
"Not completely."
He overlaid the six images digitally.
Only one person remained perfectly unchanged across every version.
Not Lawson.
Not Elizabeth.
Not Thomas.
Someone standing several feet behind them.
A woman wearing a plain gray coat.
Her face had never drawn attention because every edited version subtly changed the people around her.
Marcus enlarged the image.
The enhancement slowly sharpened her features.
Rachel gasped.
"I know her."
Everyone turned.
"Who is she?"
Rachel stared at the screen, struggling to believe what she was seeing.
"She was at my divorce hearing."
Silence.
Marcus looked back at the photograph.
The image had been taken twenty-two years before Rachel had even met Daniel Whitmore.
Yet Rachel was certain.
"I've seen her before."
Kevin compared the enhanced face against every recovered Evergreen record.
The system returned one match.
Not a judge.
Not an attorney.
Not a police officer.
