Chapter 48 - Family Observer 001

The room fell completely silent.

Kevin Ross read the screen again to make certain he had not misread the database.

Identity: Family Observer 001

Status: Active

Current Assignment: Rachel Carter

Rachel slowly shook her head.

"No..."

Marcus Hale looked toward her.

"You know her."

Rachel nodded uncertainly.

"I've seen her before."

"Where?"

Rachel closed her eyes, forcing herself to remember.

"Not just at the divorce hearing."

Everyone waited.

"I've seen her outside Noah's school."

She swallowed.

"At the grocery store."

"At the pediatric clinic."

Detective Susan Ortega immediately understood.

"She wasn't following Daniel."

Rachel looked up.

"She was following me."

Kevin searched deeper into the recovered Evergreen database.

A new field appeared beneath the woman's profile.

Observation Period

Started: 8 Years, 4 Months Ago

Rachel's breathing caught.

"Eight years..."

Marcus looked at her.

"That's before Noah was born."

Rachel nodded slowly.

"I wasn't even pregnant."

Kevin continued reading.

"Observation initiated following Subject Compatibility Review."

Marcus frowned.

"Compatibility for what?"

Kevin clicked another entry.

Access Restricted

The system demanded a higher authorization level.

Rachel stared at the monitor.

"They started watching me before I even had children."

Ortega quietly added,

"They chose you before your family even existed."

The realization settled over everyone in the room.

Daniel Whitmore had never been the beginning.

Neither had the divorce.

Someone had identified Rachel years earlier.

Everything that followed had merely been part of a much longer timeline.

Marcus returned to Thomas Hale's investigation board.

The empty space where the missing photograph belonged suddenly made more sense.

His father had not been trying to identify a criminal.

He had been trying to identify the Observer.

Kevin suddenly noticed another detail hidden inside the personnel record.

"Marcus."

"What is it?"

"There have been multiple Family Observers."

The screen expanded into a list.

Observer 001

Observer 002

Observer 003

The entries continued.

Dozens.

Perhaps hundreds.

Each assigned to different families across different years.

Rachel's profile listed only one.

Observer 001.

The very first.

Marcus looked toward Ortega.

"If she's Observer One..."

"...then she has been involved longer than everyone else."

Kevin searched her activity log.

Most entries remained encrypted.

Only one recent record was visible.

Last Confirmed Contact: Three Days Ago

Rachel tried to remember everything she had done three days earlier.

She had taken Noah to soccer practice.

Stopped for groceries.

Picked Lily up from preschool.

Nothing unusual.

Then her expression changed.

"The bookstore."

Marcus turned.

"What happened?"

Rachel stared into the distance.

"There was an older woman asking for directions."

She remembered the conversation perfectly now.

The woman had smiled kindly.

Complimented Noah's manners.

Given Lily a small paper butterfly folded from a receipt.

Rachel had thought nothing of it.

Until now.

Kevin enlarged an archived surveillance image recovered from Evergreen.

The woman in the gray coat.

The same smile.

The same folded paper butterfly in her hand.

Rachel whispered,

"It was her."

Marcus slowly folded Thomas Hale's journal shut.

"Observer 001 has been close enough to your family to speak with your children."

Before anyone could respond, one of the dormant terminals inside Thomas Hale's preserved office suddenly powered on by itself.

No one had touched it.

A single live camera feed filled the screen.

It showed the entrance to the underground facility.

Officer Liam Brooks stood exactly where Marcus had left him.

Alone.

Then, from the edge of the camera frame, the woman in the gray coat calmly stepped into view.

She stopped only a few feet behind Brooks.

She did not attack.

She did not speak.

May you like

She simply looked directly into the camera...

As though she knew Marcus was watching.
