Chapter 20 - The Name No One Expected

The recording of the anonymous call was immediately sent to the Audio Forensics Unit.
While specialists began isolating background sounds and voice patterns, Detective Ortega returned to the evidence recovered from Warehouse 12.
"If Daniel isn't the top of the chain..."
She spread every document across the conference table.
"...then we missed something."
Rachel carefully examined the files herself.
For hours she had focused only on her own case.
Now she forced herself to read the names of other families.
Different cities.
Different judges.
Different attorneys.
Yet one detail appeared again and again.
A small blue stamp in the corner of dozens of documents.
She pointed.
"This symbol."
Officer Hale leaned closer.
"I've seen it before."
The digital analyst searched thousands of scanned records.
Within seconds dozens of unrelated custody files appeared.
Every one carried the same barely noticeable blue stamp.
"It isn't a court seal," he said.
"So what is it?"
He enlarged the image until the faded letters became readable.
HCM Consulting Group
Rachel frowned.
"I've never heard of them."
Neither had anyone else.
Detective Ortega immediately requested corporate registration records.
The response arrived less than three minutes later.
"HCM Consulting Group was dissolved four years ago."
"So why is its stamp appearing on current legal documents?"
The analyst opened archived financial records.
The company's directors had all resigned on the same day.
But one shareholder remained.
Only one name appeared.
The room fell completely silent.
Officer Hale slowly read it aloud.
"Richard Lawson."
Rachel looked up immediately.
"The captain?"
Hale shook his head.
"No."
He tapped the screen.
"Not Captain Richard Lawson from our department."
He scrolled farther.
"This is..."
His voice trailed off.
"...Judge Richard Lawson."
Detective Ortega's eyes widened.
"The retired Chief Family Court Judge?"
The analyst nodded slowly.
"He officially retired three years ago."
Rachel whispered,
"But if he's retired..."
Hale stared at the screen.
"Then why does his name keep appearing behind every major transaction connected to these custody cases?"
Before anyone could answer, another notification appeared on the analyst's monitor.
An encrypted email had just arrived.
No sender.
No subject.
Only a single attachment.
When it was opened, a decades-old group photograph filled the screen.
Standing side by side were a much younger Judge Richard Lawson...
Judge Collins...
Steven Marshall...
And one more familiar face.
Officer Marcus Hale's late father.
Hale stood motionless.
May you like
He had never seen that photograph before.
Yet someone clearly wanted him to.
