Chapter 7 - The Warehouse on Harbor Road

Within twenty minutes, three police vehicles rolled through the rusted gates of an abandoned warehouse complex on Harbor Road. The massive brick buildings had once housed a furniture manufacturer decades earlier, but now shattered windows, peeling paint, and twisted metal fences gave the area the appearance of a forgotten ghost town.

Officer Marcus Hale stepped out of his cruiser first.

"Everyone stays alert," he instructed. "If Daniel Whitmore is here, we don't know whether he's alone."

Detective Susan Ortega nodded toward the black SUV parked beside the largest warehouse.

"License plate matches the vehicle that left Rachel's apartment."

Hale crouched beside the SUV.

The engine was still warm.

"He didn't leave long ago."

Another officer inspected the driver's side.

"The doors are unlocked."

Inside the vehicle were several folders, disposable gloves, bottled water, and a city map with multiple locations circled in red.

Ortega unfolded the map on the hood of the SUV.

"Rachel's apartment."

She pointed to the first circle.

"The courthouse."

A second circle.

"The self-storage facility."

Then a third.

"This warehouse."

A fourth red circle immediately caught everyone's attention.

It surrounded the address of a private family services office that frequently prepared custody evaluations for local courts.

Officer Hale frowned.

"Interesting."

The evidence technician carefully photographed everything before placing the documents into sealed evidence bags.

Meanwhile, another team searched the surrounding buildings.

The warehouse itself was enormous.

Rows of abandoned machinery stretched into darkness.

Broken skylights allowed narrow beams of sunlight to pierce the dusty air.

Every footstep echoed.

Officer Liam Brooks suddenly raised a hand.

"Movement."

Everyone froze.

At the far end of the building, someone darted behind a stack of wooden pallets.

"Police!" Hale shouted.

"Come out with your hands visible!"

Silence.

Then hurried footsteps.

The suspect began running.

"Go!"

Three officers sprinted after the figure through narrow aisles cluttered with broken equipment.

The chase lasted less than a minute before the suspect climbed a metal staircase leading toward an old office overlooking the warehouse floor.

Halfway up, the staircase groaned violently.

The suspect hesitated.

That single moment was enough.

Officer Brooks tackled him from behind.

Both men crashed onto the dusty platform.

After a brief struggle, handcuffs clicked shut.

Hale hurried upstairs.

The man was breathing heavily, his baseball cap lying several feet away.

Everyone immediately recognized him.

"Eric Whitmore."

Rachel had been right.

Eric looked around desperately.

"I didn't do anything."

Hale picked up the cap.

"Really?"

Eric remained silent.

Detective Ortega searched his pockets.

She recovered two cell phones, a flash drive, several storage unit keys, and a folded envelope containing thousands of dollars in cash.

"Looks like someone was preparing to leave town."

Eric shook his head.

"It's not what you think."

"What do we think?" Hale asked calmly.

Eric stared at the floor.

"I want a lawyer."

Hale nodded.

"That's your right."

As officers escorted Eric outside, Detective Ortega entered the upstairs office.

The room contained little more than an old desk, several folding chairs, and a portable printer.

Nothing seemed remarkable...

Until she noticed dozens of shredded papers overflowing from a trash bin.

"Marcus."

He joined her.

"What did you find?"

She pointed toward the printer.

"It was used recently."

Warm paper still rested inside the output tray.

The evidence technician carefully removed the remaining sheet.

It wasn't a legal document.

It was a checklist.

At the top, someone had typed three simple words:

Phase Two Plan

Beneath the title appeared several unchecked tasks.

* Recover remaining evidence.

* Contact witness number three.

* Relocate financial records.

* Ensure Rachel Carter cannot testify.

Officer Hale read the final line twice.

His expression hardened.

"This isn't just about custody anymore."

Detective Ortega slowly looked around the room.

"No."

She folded the checklist into an evidence sleeve.

"Someone has been planning something much bigger."

Just then, one of the officers downstairs shouted loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"Detective!"

Ortega leaned over the railing.

"What is it?"

The officer stood beside another evidence box he had discovered beneath the office floorboards.

"You need to see what's inside."

Neither Hale nor Ortega answered immediately.

May you like

Because both realized the investigation had just uncovered a hidden cache...

One that Eric had clearly never intended anyone to find.
