Chapter 24 - Evergreen Opens

No one in the Major Crimes office touched a keyboard.
The glowing message remained frozen across every monitor.
YOU FOUND EVERGREEN. NOW STOP BEFORE MORE CHILDREN DISAPPEAR.
Officer Marcus Hale slowly looked around the room.
"Disconnect every workstation from the network."
Within seconds, technicians pulled network cables, disabled wireless connections, and shut down every external communication line connected to the evidence lab.
The message remained.
Detective Susan Ortega narrowed her eyes.
"It isn't coming from the network."
The digital forensics analyst, Kevin Ross, carefully examined one of the computers.
"It was executed locally."
"Meaning?"
"Someone planted software on our evidence system before we even recovered the warehouse files."
Rachel tightened her grip around Noah's shoulder.
"They knew you would eventually find Evergreen."
Kevin nodded.
"I think they expected us to."
Marcus frowned.
"Why would anyone leave us breadcrumbs?"
"So we'd look in the wrong place."
The room fell silent.
That possibility explained far too much.
The warehouse.
The notebooks.
The forged custody orders.
The abandoned office.
Every discovery had moved the investigation forward...
Yet every step had also consumed valuable time.
Kevin suddenly spoke again.
"Wait."
He pointed toward a tiny blinking icon in the corner of the screen.
"I've seen this before."
He quickly opened an isolated forensic laptop that had never been connected to the department's network.
"This malware isn't trying to destroy data."
Marcus walked beside him.
"What is it doing?"
"It's searching."
"For what?"
Kevin restored a memory snapshot from moments before the message appeared.
Lines of encrypted code filled the display.
Then one phrase repeated dozens of times.
Locate Archive Key.
Detective Ortega immediately understood.
"The intruder isn't protecting Evergreen."
She looked toward Marcus.
"They're looking for something inside it."
Kevin compared timestamps.
"The search started the exact second we opened Hannah Pierce's hidden document."
Rachel looked confused.
"So they were watching us?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Not us."
He looked toward the evidence shelves.
"The evidence."
Kevin inserted one of the recovered flash drives from Warehouse 12 into the isolated forensic system.
No network.
No outside connection.
Only a direct forensic image.
After several minutes, a single encrypted file appeared that had previously gone unnoticed.
File Name:
EG_MASTER.KEY
The room became completely silent.
Kevin whispered,
"I think this is the Archive Key."
Marcus looked toward him.
"Can you open it?"
Kevin hesitated.
"Maybe."
"Maybe?"
"If this key unlocks Evergreen..."
He paused.
"...there's a chance whoever planted the malware will know the moment we use it."
Detective Ortega folded her arms.
"Then we don't use police computers."
Marcus nodded.
"We build an isolated environment."
"No internet."
"No department servers."
"No external storage."
Kevin smiled slightly.
"They'll think we stopped."
Rachel looked at every detective gathered around the table.
For the first time since police had knocked on her apartment door, she saw determination instead of uncertainty.
This investigation was no longer reacting.
It was preparing its first move.
Just then, an evidence officer hurried into the room carrying a sealed envelope marked Priority Overnight.
"It arrived ten minutes ago."
Marcus examined the label.
There was no return address.
Only one handwritten sentence on the front.
For Thomas Hale's Son.
Marcus slowly opened the envelope.
Inside lay a yellowed cassette tape.
A small brass key.
And a folded note written in faded blue ink.
The handwriting stopped him cold.
He recognized it instantly.
It belonged to his father.
May you like
The note contained only one sentence.
> If you're holding this, they finally know you found Evergreen—but they still don't know where I hid the truth.
