Chapter 33 - The Wooden Box

For several long seconds, no one approached the elevator.

The polished wooden box sat perfectly still beneath the bright ceiling lights, as though someone had placed it there only moments earlier. The handwritten note remained folded neatly on top.

Do not let them open the second vault.

Marcus Hale stared at the familiar handwriting.

"It matches every sample we've recovered from my father."

Kevin Ross carefully photographed the note from every angle.

"No fingerprints until we process it."

Detective Susan Ortega examined the elevator control panel.

"There are no recent fingerprints here either."

She frowned.

"Whoever sent this knew exactly how to avoid leaving evidence."

Officer Liam Brooks slowly circled the elevator.

"No footprints."

"No water."

"No mud."

"It doesn't even look like anyone stood in here."

Marcus crouched beside the wooden box.

Unlike the old archive furniture outside, the box looked newly polished. Brass hinges reflected the overhead lights, and an engraved oak tree symbol decorated the lid.

The same symbol.

The brass key.

The wax seal.

Room 214.

Everything connected.

Kevin scanned the box using a portable X-ray unit.

"No explosives."

"No wiring."

"No electronic transmitter."

Rachel quietly asked,

"So what's inside?"

Marcus looked at the note again.

"Let's find out."

He carefully lifted the lid.

Inside rested three objects.

A leather-bound appointment book.

An old pocket watch.

A sealed envelope marked:

ONLY AFTER YOU FIND LEVEL ONE

Marcus slowly picked up the pocket watch.

Its back cover carried an inscription.

To Thomas — Time Reveals What People Hide.

Rachel frowned.

"It stopped."

Kevin looked closer.

"It didn't stop."

"What do you mean?"

"The hands were deliberately positioned."

The watch displayed exactly 8:47.

Marcus remembered something.

"My father always said he never believed in coincidences."

Detective Ortega opened the appointment book.

Every page listed meetings stretching back more than twenty years.

Most names had been replaced with initials.

Some meetings occurred monthly.

Others annually.

Then she reached the final pages.

Unlike the older entries, these had been written recently.

One appointment was circled heavily in black ink.

Thursday — 8:47 PM

Today's date.

Everyone looked at the pocket watch again.

8:47.

Rachel slowly whispered,

"That's not the time it stopped."

Marcus nodded.

"It's telling us when something happens."

Kevin checked his own wristwatch.

"It's 7:58."

Less than fifty minutes remained.

Before anyone could continue, the elevator chimed once more.

Not because it was moving.

Because someone had just called it...

From a lower floor.

The display above the doors changed.

B2 → B1

Then...

B1 → G

The elevator had begun descending again.

Officer Brooks gripped his radio.

"Marcus..."

Marcus never looked away from the display.

"I know."

Someone below them had just requested the elevator.

And whoever it was...

Already knew investigators had reached Archive Level One.
