Chapter 51 - The Hidden Elevator
A loud metallic vibration rolled through Thomas Hale's preserved office.
The bookshelves along the northern wall shifted several inches before stopping.
Everyone instinctively stepped back.
Marcus raised his flashlight.
"Did anyone touch that?"
"No."
Kevin carefully examined the floor.
Fresh scrape marks crossed the concrete beneath the shelving.
Something had moved.
Officer Ortega approached cautiously.
"Help me."
Marcus and Kevin pushed against the heavy shelf.
It rotated slowly on concealed hinges.
Behind it stood another elevator.
Smaller.
Older.
Unlike the polished platform that had carried them into Phase Two, this lift looked almost military.
No buttons.
No display.
Only a circular brass lock mounted beside the doors.
Marcus stared at it.
"The pocket watch."
Kevin nodded.
"The indentation is exactly the same size."
Marcus frowned.
"But the watch is gone."
Rachel suddenly remembered the wooden box.
"What about the envelope?"
Kevin opened it carefully.
The microfilm cartridge slid into his gloved hand.
Beneath it lay something none of them had noticed before.
A second brass key.
Smaller than the first.
Attached to it was a faded paper tag.
Thomas Hale's handwriting covered only one line.
> If they discover the first archive, they'll expect you to go deeper. Don't. Use the old elevator instead.
Marcus looked from the hidden elevator to the note.
"My father found another route."
Before anyone could examine the brass lock, every light inside Thomas Hale's office dimmed.
The hidden elevator activated on its own.
A soft mechanical chime echoed through the room.
The doors slowly slid open without anyone touching the keyhole.
Inside the elevator stood only a single object.
A weathered leather briefcase.
No person.
No note.
No movement.
Marcus recognized it instantly.
It was the same briefcase his father carried in every photograph from his final investigation.
