Chapter 57 - The First Door

The climb down the maintenance ladder took nearly ten minutes.

The deeper they descended, the older the construction became.

Modern concrete gave way to rough stone walls reinforced with steel beams blackened by age.

Kevin checked the air.

"Oxygen levels are normal."

Rachel looked around.

"This place is much older than Evergreen."

Marcus nodded.

"It was here first."

At the bottom of the shaft, a narrow tunnel stretched ahead.

Old electrical cables ran along the ceiling.

Most had long since stopped working.

Only a few dim emergency lights still glowed.

Thomas Hale's blueprint guided them through several turns until the tunnel ended at a heavy oak door.

Not steel.

Not reinforced concrete.

Oak.

Exactly as Thomas had described.

Marcus examined the surface.

The wood was scarred with deep scratches.

Someone had tried to force it open years ago.

Above the handle, carved directly into the wood, were four words.

Records Remember Every Choice.

Rachel looked toward Marcus.

"The first door."

He nodded.

Thomas's warning echoed in his mind.

> Find the ledger hidden behind the first door.

> Do not open the second.

Marcus turned the old brass handle.

The hinges groaned.

The room beyond was surprisingly small.

Only shelves.

Dust.

Leather-bound ledgers stretching from floor to ceiling.

Hundreds of them.

Each spine bore a single year.

1948.

1949.

1950.

The collection continued uninterrupted for decades.

Kevin walked toward the nearest shelf.

"These aren't court files."

Marcus pulled out one ledger at random.

Every page contained handwritten entries.

Dates.

Names.

Short observations.

No legal language.

No official seals.

Rachel looked over his shoulder.

One line caught her attention.

Thomas Hale — Observation Initiated.

Marcus quickly turned the pages.

Years passed.

The entries continued.

Police academy.

Marriage.

Marcus's birth.

Transfer to Homicide.

Promotion.

Someone had been documenting Thomas Hale's life...

Long before he ever discovered Evergreen.

Rachel quietly whispered,

"They were watching your father before he started investigating them."

Marcus slowly closed the ledger.

He suddenly understood why Thomas had hidden the briefcase.

He hadn't discovered Evergreen by accident.

Someone...

Had chosen him from the very beginning.

At the far end of the archive room, hidden behind another row of shelves, stood a second oak door.

Unlike the first...

May you like

Its handle was polished.

As though someone had opened it only moments ago.
