Chapter 4 - The Neighbor Who Saw Too Much

While investigators reviewed the paperwork, Evelyn Brooks quietly remembered something she had almost forgotten.
She suddenly stood.
"The camera."
Everyone looked at her.
"What camera?" asked Detective Susan Ortega.
"The hallway camera."
Rachel blinked.
"I didn't know we had one."
"We don't," Evelyn answered. "I do."
The elderly woman pointed toward her apartment.
"My grandson installed a small security camera outside my door after someone tried stealing my medication last year."
Detective Ortega's eyes widened.
"Does it face Rachel's apartment?"
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"It sees almost the entire hallway."
Officer Hale immediately stood.
"Can we review the footage?"
"Of course."
Within minutes everyone gathered inside Evelyn's modest apartment.
Family photographs covered the walls.
Knitted blankets rested neatly on every chair.
The elderly woman carefully connected her phone to the television.
Hours of security footage appeared.
She fast-forwarded.
"Here..."
The timestamp read 11:18 PM.
Rachel watched nervously.
Daniel stepped into view wearing a baseball cap and dark jacket.
He looked around several times before pulling out a ring of keys.
Rachel gasped.
"He still has a key."
Detective Ortega leaned forward.
"No."
She paused the video.
"He has several keys."
Daniel tested one.
It failed.
Another.
Nothing.
The third unlocked Rachel's apartment.
Everyone watched him quietly enter.
Attorney Grant's face lost what little color remained.
The timestamp continued.
Seven minutes later Daniel emerged carrying a black garbage bag.
He looked over both shoulders before placing the bag beside the hallway trash chute.
Officer Hale zoomed in.
"What is that?"
Evelyn switched to another camera angle that overlooked the trash area.
Daniel opened the bag.
Inside were broken dishes...
Rotting food...
Beer bottles...
Dirty clothing...
Everything that had supposedly appeared in the photographs submitted to court.
Rachel covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Detective Ortega stared at the screen.
"He staged the apartment."
Daniel carried the trash back inside.
Ten minutes later he exited again.
This time his phone was against his ear.
Although the camera captured no audio, everyone could clearly see him laughing.
Officer Hale quietly compared the timestamp with Evelyn's earlier recording.
"They match."
The hallway became silent again.
Then Detective Ortega noticed something else.
"Wait."
She rewound the footage by thirty seconds.
Daniel wasn't alone.
A second figure briefly appeared near the stairwell.
The person wore a hood pulled low over their face.
They handed Daniel a thick envelope before disappearing downstairs.
Officer Hale froze the frame.
"Can you sharpen that?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"It's the best resolution the camera has."
The mysterious person's face remained hidden.
But one detail stood out.
On their left wrist...
A distinctive silver bracelet reflected the hallway light.
Detective Ortega quietly photographed the screen.
"Find out who that is."
Officer Hale nodded.
"If someone helped fabricate evidence against Rachel Carter..."
He looked toward the television once more.
"...then this case is much bigger than a custody dispute."
None of them noticed Attorney Melissa Grant quietly stepping toward the apartment door.
