Chapter 37 - The Mother Key

Rachel stared at the elevator as if it had opened into a nightmare built specifically for her.
“What does that mean?” she whispered.
Marcus did not answer because he did not know.
Kevin rushed back to the Evergreen server terminal and began searching through the newly unlocked files.
“Rachel Carter,” he muttered. “Mother key... mother key...”
Lines of data moved rapidly across the screen.
Then one hidden folder appeared.
MATERNAL ACCESS PROTOCOL
Kevin opened it.
A long list of names filled the display.
Every name belonged to a mother from the recovered case files.
Some were marked COMPLIANT.
Others REMOVED.
A few had a red label.
RESISTANT.
Rachel’s name appeared at the bottom.
Beside it were three words:
PRIMARY ACTIVE KEY.
Ortega leaned over Kevin’s shoulder.
“What does primary active key mean?”
Kevin read further, his expression darkening.
“It looks like Evergreen required certain parents to trigger access to deeper records.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the system was designed to protect itself legally. Some archives could only open if the parent connected to the case was physically present.”
Rachel backed away.
“So they needed me here.”
Marcus turned toward the elevator.
“They didn’t trap us because we found Evergreen.”
Ortega finished the thought.
“They guided us here because Rachel could open something they couldn’t.”
The speaker crackled again.
“You are beginning to understand.”
Marcus raised his voice.
“If you need her, then you can’t hurt her.”
The woman laughed softly.
“Detective Hale, people are always replaceable. Keys are not.”
Suddenly Noah stepped forward.
“Leave my mommy alone.”
Rachel grabbed him quickly, pulling him back.
The speaker went silent.
For one terrifying second, nobody breathed.
Then the woman spoke again, and this time her voice sounded almost curious.
“Noah Carter is awake.”
Rachel’s face went white.
Marcus looked toward Kevin.
“Shut that speaker down.”
Kevin typed frantically.
“I’m trying.”
The woman continued.
“Noah was never supposed to remain with Rachel this long.”
Rachel trembled.
“What did you say?”
The elevator lights flickered.
Then the screen above the doors changed.
B3 ACCESS WAITING
Kevin suddenly shouted.
“Marcus, the system is requesting biometric confirmation.”
“From who?”
May you like
Kevin slowly turned toward Rachel.
“From her.”
