Chapter 23 - A Phone Call in the Dark

Late that night, while most of the rescue team rested beside the lake, Sheriff Brooks quietly walked away from the camp toward the parking area.
He looked over both shoulders.
Nobody appeared to be watching.
He removed a second cellphone from inside his jacket.
The phone had no case.
No contacts.
He dialed a number from memory.
The call connected immediately.
"They found the notebook."
A voice answered quietly.
"And the tape?"
"They played it."
Several seconds passed.
"What about Reed?"
"He's heading north."
The mysterious caller sighed.
"I told you twenty years wasn't enough."
The sheriff lowered his voice.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Delay him."
The line went dead.
Brooks slipped the phone back into his pocket.
He never noticed the small trail camera attached to a nearby oak tree.
Its infrared lens had silently recorded the entire conversation.

Only one person knew that camera existed.
Captain Elias Reed.
