Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Dock

The three bullies suddenly looked less certain. A few minutes earlier, they had seen only an old man alone on a dock. Now everyone around the lake was staring at him with a mixture of shock and respect.

The tallest bully tried to laugh, but the sound came out weak.

"So what? Some retired captain thinks he can scare us?"

Captain Elias Reed turned toward him.

"I don't scare boys," he said. "I teach them when they refuse to learn."

The words made the bully's jaw tighten.

Before he could respond, the lake surface rippled near the dock. The metal bucket floated back up, caught against one of the wooden supports beneath the boards. One of the fish still moved inside it.

A small boy ran forward to grab it, but Elias raised a hand.

"Stay back."

The boy stopped immediately.

Elias stepped to the edge of the dock and looked down. His expression changed.

There was something under the dock.

Not the bucket.

Something else.

The old park ranger noticed it too. He slowly crouched and peered through the gap between the boards.

"Is that..." he began.

Elias lowered himself carefully, reaching beneath the dock with one arm. The bullies watched impatiently, still pretending they were not shaken. After a few seconds, Elias pulled out a small waterproof pouch, dark with mud and tied with fishing line.

The ranger's eyes widened.

"I haven't seen that pouch in twenty years."

Elias held it quietly.

The tallest bully frowned.

"What is that?"

The ranger turned toward the three young men, his voice suddenly cold.

"Evidence."

The word changed everything.

One of the bullies took a step back.

Another whispered, "We should go."

But Elias looked directly at them.

"No," he said. "You wanted this lake to belong to you."

He lifted the pouch.

"Now you're going to learn why men far worse than you once tried to control it—and why they failed."
