Chapter 35 - A Name That Shouldn't Be There

Everyone turned toward Henry.

He stared at the document without blinking.

"No..."

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"I never worked with them."

The rescue team leader studied the file.

According to the records, Henry had supposedly supervised operations at North Ridge for over ten years.

"It isn't true," Henry insisted.

"They stole my identity."

Elias remained calm.

"They needed someone who officially no longer existed."

Henry slowly lowered himself into a chair.

His hands trembled.

"If these files become public..."

"...everyone will think I was one of them."

Before anyone could respond, every monitor inside the surveillance room suddenly flickered to life.

One by one, the screens changed to the same image.

A single man sitting in a dark office.

His face remained hidden in shadow.

He slowly folded his hands.

"Good evening, Captain Reed."

The voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"I've been waiting a very long time for you to open Project Shoreline."

Elias stepped toward the nearest monitor.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"You've spent twenty years looking for Nathan Cross."

He leaned slightly closer to the camera.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

The room fell silent.

"You shouldn't have been asking where Nathan Cross disappeared..."

"...you should have been asking who became Nathan Cross after he vanished."

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

Every person in the room realized the investigation had just taken a far more dangerous turn.
