Chapter 49 - Cross Makes His Move
Outside the vault, Nathan Cross quietly checked his watch.
"He's reading it now."
Samuel glared at him.
"What do you want?"
Nathan answered honestly.
"To see what choice he makes."
The rescue team leader stepped forward.
"You could have destroyed everything."
"I could have."
"But then I'd learn nothing."
Nathan's smile returned.
"Captain Reed has always fascinated me."
Suddenly every light inside the archive flashed.
Warning alarms erupted throughout the underground complex.
A computerized voice announced:
Automatic data purge initiated.
Henry's eyes widened.
"No..."
Rows of storage cabinets began locking automatically.
Hidden shredders roared to life somewhere deeper underground.
Samuel looked toward the vault.
"Elias!"
Nathan calmly turned away.
"The countdown has begun."
Digital clocks mounted throughout the archive lit up simultaneously.
