Chapter 31 - The Emergency Tunnel

Elias slipped the iron key into a rusted lock hidden behind an old storage shelf. At first, nothing happened. Then a series of heavy clicks echoed through the bunker walls, followed by the slow grinding of ancient gears that had not moved for decades.
A narrow stone doorway slowly opened.
Cold air rushed through the gap.
"This passage was built before the park even existed," Henry said. "Only four people ever knew about it."
"And now?" asked the rescue team leader.
Henry looked at Elias.
"Only three."
Behind them, another violent impact shook the bunker. Dust rained from the ceiling as the attackers continued forcing their way inside.
"We're out of time," Elias said.
The group entered the tunnel one by one. The stone corridor was barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Moisture dripped steadily from the ceiling, and faded markings carved into the walls suggested the passage had once served miners many decades earlier.
Halfway through the tunnel, Samuel stopped.
He pointed his flashlight toward the wall.
Someone had carved a single sentence into the stone.
DON'T FOLLOW THE MAIN PATH. THEY ALWAYS WATCH IT.
Beneath the words were Jacob Mercer's initials.
"He came through here," Samuel whispered.
Elias gently brushed his fingers across the carving.
"He wanted someone to find this."

Another explosion echoed from behind them.
The attackers had finally entered the bunker.
