Chapter 37 - Lockdown

Warning sirens echoed through the underground complex.

A mechanical voice repeated the same message over and over.

"Security Lockdown Activated."

Heavy steel shutters descended over every visible exit.

The rescue team rushed toward the main corridor.

Blocked.

Another rescuer tried a side passage.

Also sealed.

Samuel looked around nervously.

"They've trapped us."

Henry remained surprisingly calm.

"No."

"They're trying to slow us."

Elias examined the ceiling.

Fresh air still flowed through hidden ventilation shafts.

"They're still inside."

The rescue team leader looked confused.

"Who?"

"The people controlling this place."

"If they had evacuated..."

"...they wouldn't bother locking the doors."

A faint sound echoed from deeper inside the facility.

Footsteps.

Several pairs.

Not running.

Walking.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Whoever approached wasn't afraid.

They knew the building better than anyone else.

Elias tightened his grip on his flashlight.

"They're coming."
