Chapter 41 - The Boy Without a Past

The archive fell silent after Nathan Cross pointed his cane toward Aaron Mills.

Aaron instinctively stepped backward.

"What are you talking about?"

Nathan smiled almost sympathetically.

"You truly don't remember."

The old man slowly walked between the towering shelves, his polished cane tapping rhythmically against the concrete floor.

"When you were six years old, your family disappeared during a mountain storm."

Aaron frowned.

"I was adopted."

"So you were told."

Nathan stopped beside an old filing cabinet.

"You weren't adopted."

"You were selected."

The words struck Aaron harder than any punch.

Samuel immediately stepped beside the young rescuer.

"Don't listen to him."

Nathan chuckled.

"I'm not asking him to believe me."

He gently tapped the cabinet.

"I'm asking him to read."

Inside lay a sealed folder marked Subject A-17.

Across the front...

Aaron's childhood photograph stared back at him.
