Chapter 50 - The Choice

Elias heard the alarms from inside the vault.
He immediately understood.
Someone intended to erase everything.
He looked around the chamber one final time.
There was far too much evidence for one person to carry.
Boxes lined every wall.
Entire shelves documented decades of corruption.
He couldn't save it all.
Then he noticed something hidden beneath Jacob's desk.
A compact steel case connected to a fiber-optic cable.
Its single indicator light blinked green.
Attached to it was another handwritten note.
If the archive falls... take this first.
Before Elias could reach for the case, footsteps echoed behind him.
Not rushed.
Not frightened.
Someone else had entered the vault.
Elias slowly turned.
The figure remained hidden in the shadows.
"You finally found it," the stranger said.
Unlike Nathan Cross...
Unlike Jacob's recording...
This voice was completely unfamiliar.
Then the stranger stepped into the light.
Elias stared without saying a word.
Around his neck hung an old rescue identification badge.
The photograph on it was faded.
But the name was still readable.
Jacob Mercer.
The man smiled faintly.
May you like
"I think we've both been looking for the wrong enemy."
The archive alarms continued counting down in the distance as the truth became even more complicated than anyone had imagined.
