Chapter 13 - A Call in the Middle of the Night

At 2:17 a.m., Emma's phone vibrated across her bedside table.
Half asleep, she answered.
It was her cousin Rachel.
Her voice shook with panic.
"Emma... Lily won't stop crying."
Emma sat upright immediately.
"How long?"
"Almost three hours."
The familiar words sent a chill down her spine.
Rachel explained everything.
No fever.
No vomiting.
No obvious injury.
Nothing seemed unusual except the relentless crying.
Emma remained calm.
"I'm not saying it's the same thing Noah had."
"I know."
"But don't ignore your instincts."
Rachel hesitated.
"Should I wait until morning?"
Emma remembered asking herself that exact question.
"If something feels wrong, let a doctor examine her."
Forty minutes later Rachel called again—from the children's emergency department.
"They're looking at her now."
Emma stayed awake until sunrise.
Finally another message arrived.
Everything was fine.
Lily had developed a painful ear infection that had worsened much faster than anyone expected.
Antibiotics were started immediately.
Rachel added one final sentence.
"If I hadn't remembered Noah's story, I probably would have waited."
Emma smiled with relief.
The situations were completely different.
The illnesses had nothing in common.
But the lesson remained the same.
Persistent, unusual crying deserved attention.
Sometimes the cause turned out to be minor.
Sometimes it required urgent treatment.
The important part wasn't guessing correctly.
It was recognizing when something truly wasn't normal.
Emma placed her phone back on the nightstand.
Outside, dawn was beginning to color the sky.
She quietly walked into Noah's room.

He slept peacefully beneath his blanket, hugging the stuffed elephant that had once failed to comfort him during the longest afternoon of Emma's life.
Watching him breathe steadily, she silently thanked every doctor, nurse, and parent who had ever chosen to take a worried family seriously.
