Chapter 27 - Noah's Endless Questions

By the time summer approached again, Noah had become an endless source of questions.

"Why birds fly?"

"Why rain fall?"

"Why moon follow car?"

Emma and Daniel often laughed because they couldn't answer quickly enough.

One afternoon they visited the botanical gardens.

Noah stopped every few steps to examine flowers, insects, stones, and tree bark.

He crouched beside a tiny snail moving across a leaf.

"So little."

Daniel knelt beside him.

"Yes."

"Can touch?"

"We'll look with our eyes today."

Noah accepted the answer and continued observing without complaint.

Emma watched quietly.

She realized something had changed over the past year.

Before the hospital incident, she might have hurried him along.

Now she encouraged careful exploration.

Looking closely.

Asking questions.

Taking time.

Curiosity itself wasn't dangerous.

In many ways, curiosity had saved Noah.

If she hadn't looked carefully inside his mouth that afternoon...

If she hadn't trusted the feeling that something was different...

The outcome might have been very different.

Later, while walking home beneath rows of blooming trees, Noah slipped his small hand into Emma's.

"Mama?"

"Yes?"

"I happy."

Emma smiled.

"So am I."

She knew new challenges would come as Noah grew older.

But she also knew their family's journey was still unfolding, filled with new lessons waiting just beyond the next ordinary day—lessons neither of them could yet imagine, but that would continue shaping the story of their lives.
