Chapter 24 - A Question No One Expected
The Family Safety Day had officially ended, but small groups of parents still lingered around the exhibits, chatting with doctors and volunteers.
Emma was packing away brochures when a young father approached her.
He looked hesitant.
"I've been meaning to ask you something all afternoon."
Emma smiled.
"Of course."
He glanced toward his three-year-old son, who was building a tower from oversized foam blocks.
"After everything that happened with Noah... weren't you terrified every single day afterward?"
Emma paused before answering.
She knew exactly what he meant.
For months after the incident, every unexpected cough had made her heart race.
Every unexplained cry had sent dozens of frightening possibilities through her mind.
"There was a time when I was," she admitted.
"So how did you stop?"
Emma looked toward Noah, who was happily chasing bubbles released by one of the museum volunteers.
"I realized something."
"The goal isn't to eliminate every risk."
"It's to learn the difference between ordinary childhood and signs that deserve attention."
The father nodded slowly.
"I think I needed to hear that."
Dr. Harris happened to walk past and overheard the final sentence.
He smiled.
"Parents often believe good parenting means never making mistakes."
He folded his arms.
"It doesn't."
"It means continuing to learn."
The conversation soon grew as several nearby parents joined in.
Questions came one after another.
How often should toys be inspected?
How do you recognize unusual symptoms?
When should you visit the emergency department?
Dr. Harris answered the medical questions carefully, always reminding everyone that every child and every situation could be different.
Emma noticed something remarkable.
Nobody in the group was pretending to have all the answers.
Instead, everyone was learning from one another.
By the time the museum lights began dimming, several families had exchanged phone numbers.
They planned to stay in touch, sharing experiences as their children grew.
