Chapter 38 - Dr. Harris Receives an Award
One Friday afternoon, Emma received an invitation from the children's hospital.
Dr. Harris was being recognized for his years of service in pediatric emergency medicine, and several families had been invited to attend.
Emma, Daniel, and Noah happily accepted.
The hospital auditorium filled with doctors, nurses, technicians, volunteers, and former patients.
As the ceremony began, colleagues described Dr. Harris's calm leadership, kindness, and dedication.
One speaker mentioned something Emma hadn't known.
"He has trained more than one hundred pediatric residents during his career."
Another added,
"His greatest lesson has always been simple: listen carefully—to both the child and the family."
When Dr. Harris stepped onto the stage, the audience applauded for several minutes.
After receiving the award, he surprised everyone.
Instead of speaking only about medicine, he thanked the families.
"Every child who enters our department teaches us something."
He paused.
"And every parent who shares their experience helps us become better physicians."
Emma felt unexpectedly emotional.
Later, during the reception, Dr. Harris introduced Noah to several younger doctors.
"This young man unknowingly helped teach many future pediatricians."
Noah looked puzzled.
"I did?"
Dr. Harris laughed.
"You certainly did."
