Chapter 4 - What the Tweezers Revealed

Emma instinctively stepped closer, but Dr. Harris gently raised one hand.

"Please don't move. I need him to stay as still as possible."

Noah's exhausted cries had become little more than ragged sobs. His tiny hands clutched Emma's sleeve while tears streamed down his flushed cheeks. Every muscle in his body remained tense.

The doctor adjusted the angle of the examination light.

"There..."

He carefully slipped the thin tips of the tweezers beneath the edge of the dark object.

Instead of resisting like tissue, it shifted slightly.

Emma blinked.

It wasn't part of Noah's mouth.

Dr. Harris slowly lifted.

A small, black, cup-shaped object emerged from the roof of the child's mouth.

For a brief second Emma couldn't even identify what she was seeing.

The doctor placed it onto a sterile tray.

It landed with a tiny plastic click.

Emma stared.

"It... it's plastic?"

Dr. Harris nodded.

"It appears to be a small rubber suction cup."

Emma frowned in confusion.

"A suction cup?"

"The kind often attached to bath toys, window decorations, toy darts, or small accessories."

The tiny object had created an almost perfect seal against the roof of Noah's mouth. Every attempt to swallow, nurse, or move his tongue had increased the discomfort. The pressure had become unbearable, yet because it sat so high in his mouth, it looked almost like part of his anatomy.

The moment it was removed, Noah suddenly stopped crying.

Complete silence filled the examination room.

Emma froze.

She had forgotten what silence sounded like.

Noah blinked several times, breathing heavily as though he had just finished running a marathon. Then he looked around the room in confusion.

His tiny shoulders slowly relaxed.

Dr. Harris checked his mouth once more.

"No bleeding."

He examined the tissue carefully.

"Just some irritation."

Emma covered her face with both hands.

For nearly four hours she had imagined unimaginable illnesses.

She had prepared herself to hear words like surgery, cancer, emergency scans, lifelong treatment.

Instead...

A tiny suction cup.

The relief hit so suddenly that her knees became weak.

Tears rolled freely down her cheeks as Noah reached toward her, wanting nothing more than to be held.

She hugged him tightly.

"I'm so sorry..."

The doctor quietly handed her a tissue before continuing his examination.

"There are still a few things I'd like to discuss before you go home."

Emma nodded immediately.

May you like

Whatever he wanted to say...

She intended to remember every single word.
