Chapter 26 - The New Pediatric Resident
One rainy Tuesday morning, Emma brought Noah to the hospital for a routine wellness check.
The waiting room looked familiar.
Colorful murals covered the walls.
Children flipped through picture books while parents filled out paperwork.
When their name was called, Emma noticed a young doctor entering alongside Dr. Harris.
"This is Dr. Sofia Patel," Dr. Harris said.
"She's one of our newest pediatric residents."
Dr. Patel smiled warmly.
"I've heard about Noah."
Emma laughed softly.
"I hope only good things."
"Mostly," Dr. Patel replied.
"Your case became part of our orientation."
As Noah played with wooden beads on an activity table, Dr. Patel explained what had impressed her most.
"It wasn't just the unusual object."
"It was how your observations helped guide the examination."
Emma looked surprised.
"I didn't do very much."
"You noticed something had changed."
"You described exactly when it started."
"You knew this cry wasn't normal for your child."
Dr. Harris nodded.
"Parents know their children better than anyone."
He emphasized that careful history from families often provided essential clues during pediatric evaluations.
The appointment itself went smoothly.
Noah had grown taller.
He had gained weight.
Everything looked healthy.
Before leaving, Dr. Patel thanked Emma once more.
"I hope I'll remember your story whenever I meet a worried parent."
Emma smiled.
"I hope every child you see turns out to be perfectly fine."
"So do I."
"But if they aren't..."
She looked toward Noah.
"I hope they find someone who listens."
