Chapter 3 - The Doctor's Serious Expression

Dr. Michael Harris entered the examination room carrying only a small tablet and a calm smile.

He had treated frightened children for nearly twenty years.

Usually, parents looked more terrified than the patients.

Emma stood immediately.

"Please help him."

Dr. Harris nodded reassuringly.

"I will. First, let's take our time."

Those simple words slowed Emma's racing heart only slightly.

The doctor listened carefully as she explained everything.

The four hours of nonstop crying.

The refusal to eat.

The strange dark spot.

The internet searches she now regretted reading.

He asked gentle questions.

"Did he fall recently?"

"No."

"Any choking episode?"

"I don't think so."

"Has he swallowed any toys?"

"I've checked everything."

Dr. Harris washed his hands and pulled on gloves.

He adjusted a bright headlamp over his forehead.

"Emma, I'll need you to hold Noah securely."

The toddler immediately sensed something unfamiliar.

His crying intensified.

The doctor waited.

He never rushed frightened children.

After several quiet moments, Noah inhaled deeply before another scream.

"Now."

Dr. Harris gently placed a tongue depressor inside the child's mouth.

His light illuminated the roof of Noah's mouth.

Emma searched the doctor's face desperately.

At first he showed no emotion.

Then...

His eyebrows narrowed.

The room became completely silent except for Noah's exhausted sobs.

Dr. Harris leaned closer.

He adjusted the light.

Looked again.

His expression changed.

Not panic.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Emma noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

The doctor didn't answer.

Instead, he reached toward a stainless-steel tray.

Among several instruments, he selected a long pair of medical tweezers.

Emma's heartbeat became deafening.

Why would he need tweezers?

The doctor carefully positioned the instrument beneath the mysterious dark object.

His movements were incredibly gentle.

Almost delicate.

He paused.

Examined it one final time.

Then very slowly...

He lifted the edge of the black shape.

Emma gasped.

The object moved.

It wasn't attached to Noah's mouth the way she had feared.

But it definitely wasn't supposed to be there either.

Dr. Harris remained completely focused.

His voice stayed calm.

"I think I know exactly what's causing all of this."

Emma could barely breathe.

"What is it?"

The doctor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he continued lifting the mysterious object little by little, making sure not to hurt Noah.

As more of it came free, Emma realized she had never imagined anything remotely like this.

The explanation she was about to hear would change the way she looked at everyday objects forever—and it would become a warning she would later share with every parent she met.
