Chapter 33 - The Classroom Safety Project
A few weeks later, Noah's preschool announced a special project called Little Safety Helpers.
Each family was invited to bring one simple safety lesson children could understand.
Some parents demonstrated bicycle helmets.
Others explained why seat belts mattered.
Emma wasn't sure what to contribute.
That evening Noah surprised her.
"We can talk about looking."
"Looking?"
He nodded proudly.
"Looking before touching."
Emma smiled.
Together they prepared a simple activity.
They placed several ordinary household objects on a table.
A soft stuffed bear.
A wooden block.
A large spoon.
A toy with a loose wheel.
The children gathered around.
Emma asked, "Can anyone find something that doesn't look quite right?"
At first, everyone pointed randomly.
Then one little girl noticed the loose wheel.
"It wiggles!"
"It does," Emma replied.
"What should we do?"
The children shouted different answers.
"Tell a grown-up!"
"Don't play with it!"
"Fix it!"
The teachers applauded.
The lesson lasted only fifteen minutes, but afterward several parents stayed behind.
One father admitted he had never inspected his daughter's toys after buying them.
Another grandmother said she planned to check everything in her house that evening.
Emma hadn't tried to frighten anyone.
