Chapter 46 - The New Neighbor

A new family moved into the apartment next door.

They had recently welcomed their first child, a cheerful ten-month-old girl named Lily.

One evening, Emma met Lily's parents while collecting the mail.

They looked exhausted.

"Not sleeping much?" Emma asked gently.

The young couple laughed.

"How could you tell?"

Over the following weeks they often chatted in the hallway.

Sometimes about naps.

Sometimes about feeding schedules.

Sometimes about absolutely nothing except surviving another busy week.

One Saturday, the new neighbors invited Emma and Noah over for coffee.

Lily happily crawled across a soft play mat while Noah carefully stacked wooden blocks nearby.

Emma noticed that one colorful rattle had developed a tiny crack near its handle.

She picked it up.

"This might be worth replacing."

Lily's mother examined it closely.

"I honestly didn't notice."

"It happens."

The young mother smiled gratefully.

"I'm still learning."

Emma nodded.

"So am I."

Together they looked through the toy basket.

Most items were perfectly safe.

A few had become worn after months of daily use.

By the time they finished, only three toys needed replacing.

Lily's father sighed with relief.

"I expected you to find half the basket dangerous."

Emma laughed.

"No."

"Most things are perfectly fine."

"We're just checking."

The conversation continued long into the afternoon.

By the time Noah and Emma returned home, they had gained not only new neighbors but new friends as well.

Sometimes helping another family began with nothing more complicated than paying attention together.
