Chapter 19 - The Toy Donation Project
As winter approached, Emma began sorting through Noah's old toys.
Many were still in excellent condition.
Others showed signs of wear that only careful inspection revealed.
Instead of simply donating everything, she contacted a local family resource center.
"I'd like to help," she explained.
The coordinator welcomed her warmly.
When Emma arrived with several boxes, volunteers carefully examined every toy before placing it on the shelves.
One volunteer smiled.
"We inspect everything before giving it to another family."
Emma appreciated the process.
Several toys were immediately removed because loose parts had developed over time.
Another volunteer explained that donated toys often passed through many homes over several years.
Even high-quality products eventually wore down.
Emma spent the afternoon helping inspect, clean, and organize toys.
As families arrived, children excitedly chose books, puzzles, and stuffed animals.
Watching their smiles reminded Emma that safety and generosity could exist together.
Before leaving, the coordinator thanked her.
"You've given us more than toys today."
Emma looked puzzled.
"What do you mean?"
"You reminded all of us that caring for children isn't only about providing things."
"It's about paying attention."
Driving home through the first light snowfall of the season, Emma glanced into the rearview mirror.
Noah was peacefully asleep in his car seat, clutching a well-loved stuffed elephant.
