Chapter 44 - A Rainy Morning Surprise
The first heavy rain of autumn arrived before sunrise.
By the time Emma drove Noah to kindergarten, windshield wipers moved steadily across the glass while children hurried toward the entrance beneath colorful umbrellas.
Inside the classroom, backpacks lined the walls, jackets hung neatly on small hooks, and excited voices echoed through the room.
As Noah took off his raincoat, his teacher, Mrs. Collins, smiled.
"Good morning, Noah."
"Good morning!"
Emma was about to leave when Mrs. Collins stopped her.
"We're doing a science activity today. The children will be exploring different natural objects—pinecones, leaves, smooth stones, and shells."
Emma nodded.
"That sounds wonderful."
"We've already checked everything for sharp edges."
Emma appreciated the comment.
Over the past year, the teachers had become meticulous about inspecting classroom materials before every activity.
The morning passed peacefully.
Just before lunch, however, Mrs. Collins noticed something unexpected.
Several children had gathered around a plastic storage container, trying to pull off one of its damaged locking clips.
The clip had cracked without anyone noticing.
Fortunately, Noah immediately stepped back.
"I think it's broken."
Mrs. Collins walked over and examined it.
Sure enough, the plastic latch had split into two pieces.
She thanked Noah before removing the entire container.
Later that afternoon, she mentioned the incident to Emma.
"It was a tiny crack."
"I almost missed it."
Emma smiled.
"Sometimes tiny things deserve a second look."
Mrs. Collins laughed.
"I've started saying that to my class."
Driving home, Noah proudly announced,
"I helped today."
Emma glanced at him through the rearview mirror.
"What happened?"
"I saw something funny."
"You told your teacher?"
"Yep."
Emma realized that observation had become second nature for him.
