Chapter 18 - A Father's Return

Daniel finally returned home after nearly three months overseas.
Noah ran through the airport terminal shouting, "Daddy!"
Daniel lifted him high into the air while Emma watched with tears in her eyes.
That evening, after Noah had fallen asleep, the couple sat quietly in the kitchen.
Daniel looked around the apartment.
"I can tell you've changed a few things."
Emma laughed softly.
Nearly every cabinet now had child locks.
Cleaning products had been moved higher.
Small decorations had disappeared from low shelves.
Old toys had been replaced.
"I may have gone a little overboard."
Daniel gently squeezed her hand.
"I don't think so."
The next morning, he helped reorganize the toy shelves.
Each toy was inspected before being returned.
Anything damaged went into a discard box.
Noah watched curiously.
"My toys broken?"
Daniel knelt beside him.
"Some of them are."
"Can Daddy fix?"
"Some."
"And some we throw away because we want you to stay safe."
Noah accepted the answer without complaint and wandered off to build a tower from wooden blocks.
Daniel looked toward Emma.
"I used to think accidents happened because parents weren't paying attention."
Emma nodded.
"So did I."
"Now I understand."
Children moved faster than adults could predict.
They discovered possibilities adults never considered.
Parenting wasn't about eliminating every risk.
It was about noticing the ones that could be prevented.
The realization brought both of them a quiet sense of peace.

Not because they believed they could control everything.
But because they knew they would face future challenges together.
