Chapter 32 - The Unexpected Phone Call

Several months passed peacefully.

Noah had grown taller, more confident, and endlessly talkative. Every afternoon after preschool, he rushed home eager to tell Emma about new games, new songs, and new friends.

One rainy Wednesday, Emma's phone rang while she was preparing dinner.

The caller ID displayed the name of Noah's preschool.

Her heart skipped a beat.

She answered immediately.

"Hello?"

The teacher's voice remained calm.

"Emma, please don't panic. Noah is fine."

Those words helped—but only a little.

"We've noticed he's been rubbing the inside of his mouth since lunchtime. He's not crying, but he says something feels funny."

Emma's thoughts immediately returned to the hospital visit from more than a year earlier.

She took a deep breath.

"I'm on my way."

Twenty minutes later, she arrived at the preschool.

Noah greeted her with a smile.

"Hi, Mommy."

"You feeling okay?"

He nodded.

"It feels scratchy."

Emma carefully looked inside his mouth.

She saw nothing unusual.

No dark spots.

No swelling.

No obvious injury.

Still, she remembered what Dr. Harris had once told her.

"When something doesn't seem right, it's okay to have it checked."

Instead of panicking, she called the pediatric clinic.

A same-day appointment happened to be available.

Dr. Harris examined Noah carefully.

After several minutes, he smiled.

"A baby tooth is beginning to loosen earlier than expected."

Emma laughed with relief.

"That's all?"

"That's all."

Noah looked confused.

"My tooth moving?"

"It is."

"Will it fall out?"

"Eventually."

On the drive home, Emma realized something had changed.

A year earlier she would have imagined the worst.

Now she had learned something much more valuable.

She could stay calm while still taking Noah's symptoms seriously.

Fear no longer controlled her decisions.

Experience did.
