Chapter 17 - Restoring More Than Reputation

The district announced that classes would continue as scheduled, but several independent review teams would remain on campus throughout the week.
Their mission extended beyond discipline.
They wanted to understand the school's culture.
Investigators met with teachers.
Counselors.
Custodians.
Bus drivers.
Office assistants.
Even cafeteria staff.
Every perspective mattered.
One cafeteria worker remembered Alex regularly helping younger students carry lunch trays.
A custodian described finding damaged wheelchair-accessible signs multiple times over the years.
The school librarian recalled dozens of afternoons when Alex volunteered to repair computers after finishing homework.
Each interview revealed another side of the student many classmates had barely noticed until the viral video.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Grant announced the creation of temporary student discussion groups.
Participation was voluntary.
Attendance quickly exceeded expectations.
Students wanted somewhere to speak honestly.
Not because they were forced.
Because they were finally being heard.
Emma encouraged Alex to attend one of the sessions.
He hesitated.
"I'm tired of talking about what happened."
"You don't have to."
"So why go?"
"Because everyone keeps talking about you."
Alex sighed.
"I'd rather they talk with me."
Emma smiled.
"Exactly."
During the discussion, younger students asked questions they had never felt comfortable asking before.
"What should we do if we see bullying?"
"How do we help without making things worse?"
"What if our friends are the ones doing it?"
The conversation lasted well beyond the scheduled hour.
Teachers mostly listened.
Students led.
Outside the meeting room, Principal Harris observed quietly through the open doorway.
For the first time in many years, he saw genuine conversations replacing whispered rumors.
He knew rebuilding trust would take far longer than repairing policies.
But perhaps this was where it began.
As the meeting concluded, Investigator Bennett approached Harris carrying another document.
"We traced several deleted emails."
Harris frowned.
"Recovered?"
She nodded.
"Our forensic team restored them this morning."
The timestamps stretched back years.
And some of those emails appeared to answer the question that had troubled everyone since the investigation began.
