Chapter 59 - The National Invitation

The email from Dr. Ortiz arrived with a detailed schedule attached.
The National Student Innovation Summit would bring together hundreds of students, educators, researchers, rehabilitation specialists, and nonprofit organizations from across the country. Unlike the regional competition, this event focused entirely on collaboration.
There would be no first-place trophy.
No championship title.
Instead, teams would present ideas, exchange research, and build partnerships that could continue long after the conference ended.
Alex scrolled through the agenda.
Workshops.
Panel discussions.
Prototype demonstrations.
Community design sessions.
Emma leaned over his shoulder.
"This is huge."
Coach Daniels smiled.
"It is."
Alex hesitated.
"I don't know if I'm ready to teach people from all over the country."
Coach Daniels folded his arms.
"You've been doing exactly that without realizing it."
The following afternoon, the statewide network held its first planning meeting.
Students from dozens of schools joined the video conference.
Some recognized Alex from the regional competition.
Others knew him only through Version 15 and the collaborative engineering platform.
Dr. Ortiz began the meeting.
"The summit isn't about presenting perfect technology."
He paused.
"It's about showing how students can solve problems together."
He assigned mixed planning groups.
One team would organize demonstrations.
Another would coordinate accessibility testing.
Alex's group received a different responsibility.
Design an interactive workshop where visitors could experience how small environmental obstacles affect daily mobility.
Emma smiled.
"Now that's interesting."
Alex nodded.
"If people understand the problem..."
"They'll design better solutions."
The planning session lasted nearly three hours.
By the end, whiteboards overflowed with sketches, schedules, and ideas.
No one seemed eager to leave.
As the call ended, Dr. Ortiz remained online.
"Alex."
"Yes?"
"I have one favor."
"What is it?"
"I'd like you to open the summit."
Alex blinked.
"Me?"
"Not with a speech."
Dr. Ortiz smiled.
May you like
"With a story."
