Chapter 55 - The Statewide Initiative
Alex reread the email three times before forwarding it to Emma.
The subject line alone sounded almost unreal.
Proposal for a Statewide Student Accessibility Innovation Network.
Within an hour, the robotics team gathered inside the familiar workshop at Westbrook High.
Coach Daniels projected the proposal onto the wall.
The university planned to connect engineering clubs from more than forty schools across the state. Instead of competing against one another throughout the year, students would collaborate on accessibility challenges submitted by hospitals, rehabilitation centers, public libraries, transportation agencies, and community organizations.
Each challenge would focus on a real problem.
Each solution would be openly shared.
No school would own the final designs.
Dr. Ortiz joined the meeting through video conference.
"Our goal isn't to produce trophies."
He smiled.
"It's to produce ideas that can actually help people."
The room immediately filled with questions.
"How many teams?"
"What kind of projects?"
"Will middle schools participate?"
"Can community members suggest challenges?"
Dr. Ortiz answered each one patiently.
Then he looked directly at Alex.
"We'd also like several student representatives to help shape the program before it officially launches."
Alex glanced toward Emma.
"I've never helped organize something this large."
Dr. Ortiz nodded.
"Neither have we."
Everyone laughed.
That evening, Alex opened the blank notebook Dr. Ortiz had given him.
Instead of sketching another invention, he wrote a title across the first page.
Ideas Worth Building Together
It felt like the beginning of something entirely different.
