The robotics lab remained open every evening that week.
Teachers volunteered to supervise.
Parents donated materials.
Former club members returned to help machine replacement parts.
The room buzzed with quiet determination.
Alex focused on solving one problem.
Loose gravel.
Every previous prototype performed well on smooth surfaces.
None responded quickly enough when the terrain suddenly changed.
Emma suggested adding another sensor.
"It would react faster."
Alex shook his head.
"Reaction isn't enough."
He drew several circles across the whiteboard.
"It needs to predict weight transfer before the wheel slips."
The discussion continued for hours.
Students challenged one another's ideas respectfully.
Every failed attempt led to another possibility.
Watching from the doorway, Principal Harris realized the workshop represented everything the school hoped to encourage.
Collaboration.
Curiosity.
Respect.
No one cared who received credit for individual suggestions.
They simply wanted the best solution.
Late that evening, Marcus Reed visited the lab after finishing work.
He studied the prototype carefully.
"I've argued accessibility cases for years," he said.
"But I've never seen students design solutions with this level of detail."
Alex smiled.
"We're still learning."
Marcus nodded.
"So are the rest of us."
Before leaving, he offered to connect the team with rehabilitation engineers willing to review the design after the competition.
Alex accepted gratefully.
Outside, rain began falling steadily.
Emma looked through the laboratory window.
"Good."
Alex laughed.
"Good?"
"We need to know whether Version 15 works when everything goes wrong."
The team agreed.
Tomorrow's testing would take place outside.
