Chapter 66 - Another Journey Begins

The morning of departure arrived before sunrise.
Two school buses waited outside Westbrook High.
Parents helped load equipment cases while students carefully secured prototypes inside protective containers.
Version 16 occupied its own padded transport crate.
Although still under development, it would serve as a demonstration model during collaborative workshops.
Emma completed the final equipment checklist.
"Laptops?"
"Packed."
"Tools?"
"Packed."
"Backup batteries?"
Ryan answered through the group chat.
"Already loaded."
Coach Daniels climbed aboard the first bus.
"No one forget anything?"
Laughter echoed through the parking lot.
As the buses pulled away, students watched Westbrook High disappear behind them.
The trip to the National Student Innovation Summit would take most of the day.
Rather than wasting the time, the teams transformed the ride into another planning session.
Some reviewed presentations.
Others refined software.
Alex opened the notebook Dr. Ortiz had given him months earlier.
He reread the very first sentence he had written inside.
Ideas Worth Building Together.
The words felt even more meaningful now.
Around him, students from different schools exchanged ideas as if they had known one another for years.
Competition had gradually become collaboration.
By late afternoon, the city skyline appeared in the distance.
Huge convention banners welcomed participants from across the country.
Twelve additional states.
Hundreds of students.
Dozens of universities.
Industry mentors.
Community organizations.
The largest gathering any member of the Westbrook team had ever attended.
As the buses entered the convention center parking area, every conversation slowed.
Students looked out the windows in quiet amazement.
Dr. Ortiz stood near the entrance waiting to greet each arriving team.
When Alex stepped off the bus, Dr. Ortiz smiled warmly.
"Welcome."
He gestured toward the enormous glass building stretching across the campus.
"This week isn't about showing everyone what you've already built."
He paused.
"It's about discovering what all of you can build next."
Alex looked around at the hundreds of students carrying prototypes through the entrance.

Somewhere inside that building were future teammates, future mentors, future collaborators, and challenges no one had anticipated.
He closed his notebook, adjusted the strap of his backpack, and followed the others inside, ready to begin another chapter of a journey that continued to grow far beyond the walls of Westbrook High.
