Chapter 49 - The Notebook Returns
Back at Westbrook High, the robotics lab remained busy even while Alex attended the university program.
Coach Daniels organized younger students into small mentoring groups.
His goal wasn't simply to prepare future competitions.
He wanted experienced students to teach newcomers how to think through problems.
One afternoon, a freshman named Lily hesitated before approaching Alex.
"I found something."
She carefully placed an old engineering notebook on the workbench.
Alex immediately recognized it.
The notebook damaged during the hallway incident.
Most pages had dried into wrinkled layers of paper.
"I thought it was ruined."
Lily smiled.
"The librarian helped preserve it."
Several pages remained unreadable.
Others had survived surprisingly well.
Near the middle, Alex found an early sketch of Version 3.
Primitive.
Oversized.
Completely impractical.
Emma laughed.
"We actually thought that design would work."
"So did we."
Coach Daniels looked through the notebook.
"Keep it."
"Even though it's outdated?"
He nodded.
"It reminds you that improvement leaves a trail."
That evening, Alex scanned every remaining page into a digital archive.
He added notes describing what each failed prototype had taught the team.
Not because the old ideas still worked.
Because understanding why they failed remained valuable.
As he finished uploading the final page, he received another email from Dr. Ortiz.
The subject line was brief.
Community Presentation Scheduled.
Instead of presenting to judges, every team would soon present directly to community members who had inspired their designs.
Alex smiled.
"This one feels more important."
Emma agreed.
