Chapter 57 - Returning to the Hallway
The school year resumed with familiar sounds.
Lockers closing.
Students laughing.
Teachers greeting new classes.
Alex rolled through the main hallway during the first morning and instinctively slowed near the place where everything had changed months earlier.
The polished floor looked exactly the same.
Yet it felt completely different.
Several freshmen passed without recognizing the location.
To them, it was simply another hallway.
Coach Daniels joined him.
"You stopped."
"I remembered."
Coach nodded.
"I do too."
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Then a freshman accidentally dropped several books.
Before Alex could move, three nearby students immediately helped gather them.
No one laughed.
No one recorded the moment.
They simply helped.
Alex watched quietly.
Small actions.
Ordinary kindness.
Exactly the kind of culture the school had hoped to build.
Later that afternoon, Superintendent Grant visited Westbrook to review progress.
The latest student surveys showed more students reporting concerns early instead of remaining silent.
Counselors documented faster follow-ups.
Accessibility improvements continued across campus.
Grant addressed the student council.
"We're seeing encouraging changes."
She paused.
"But culture isn't something you finish."
Alex understood immediately.
Just like engineering.
Every solution required maintenance.
Every improvement demanded attention.
As the meeting ended, Emma handed Alex a folded note.
It wasn't anonymous.
It came from one of the incoming freshmen.
"Thank you for making this school feel less frightening than I expected."
Alex folded the note carefully and placed it inside the same notebook where he now collected ideas for future projects.
