Chapter 72 - The Community Design Lab

Within a month, the robotics classroom transformed into something entirely new.
The sign outside the door no longer read simply:
Robotics Laboratory.
A second sign appeared underneath.
Community Design Lab — Visitors Welcome Every Thursday.
The idea came directly from the summit.
Instead of designing projects in isolation, students invited community members to participate from the beginning.
The first Thursday exceeded every expectation.
Parents arrived with children.
Veterans stopped by after work.
Occupational therapists volunteered.
Retirees brought sketches of homemade solutions they had invented over the years.
The room buzzed with conversations.
One grandfather demonstrated a simple handle he had built to help open heavy doors.
A teenager explained difficulties using public drinking fountains.
A delivery driver described navigating inaccessible loading areas every day.
Alex listened more than he spoke.
His notebook filled quickly.
Emma eventually laughed.
"You've already written six pages."
"I'm trying not to forget anything."
Dr. Ortiz visited unexpectedly that afternoon.
He watched students interviewing visitors before touching a single tool.
"This," he said quietly to Coach Daniels, "is exactly what we hoped would happen."
Coach Daniels smiled.
"They've stopped waiting for assignments."
At another table, Lily worked with a group of middle-school students building inexpensive classroom organizers that could be adjusted for different mobility needs.
Across the room, Ryan joined through a live video connection, reviewing digital models submitted by students from three other schools.
The laboratory no longer belonged only to Westbrook High.
It had become a meeting place for ideas.
Before leaving, one visitor shook Alex's hand.
"I came here expecting to see impressive technology."
He looked around the room.
"I didn't expect to feel heard."

Alex realized that comment mattered as much as any engineering award.
