Chapter 5 - A Mother Arrives

Maria Carter arrived at Westbrook High twenty minutes later.

She did not storm through the doors screaming.

That made her even more frightening.

She walked quickly, one hand gripping her phone, the other clutching Alex’s spare jacket. Her face was pale, but her eyes were sharp.

The receptionist stood the moment she entered.

“Mrs. Carter, Principal Harris is waiting—”

“Where is my son?”

The question was quiet.

The room went silent.

A nurse stepped out from the side hallway.

“He’s warm now. We gave him dry clothes from lost and found. He’s physically okay.”

Maria closed her eyes for one second.

Physically okay.

Parents learned to fear those words.

Because they usually meant something else was broken.

She followed the nurse into a small conference room where Alex sat with a blanket over his shoulders. His hair was still damp. His backpack lay open beside him, notebooks ruined, pages curled from water.

When he saw his mother, his composure cracked.

“Mom, I’m sorry.”

Maria crossed the room instantly and wrapped her arms around him.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Principal Harris stood nearby, ashamed.

“We are reviewing the footage.”

Maria turned slowly.

“Reviewing?”

Her voice stayed calm, but everyone heard the warning beneath it.

“My son has come home quiet for months. He stopped wearing certain clothes. He stopped eating lunch in the cafeteria. He told me he was tired. And now I find out students poured freezing water on him in front of a crowd?”

Principal Harris looked down.

“We were not aware the bullying had reached this level.”

Alex whispered, “I reported some of it.”

The room froze.

Brooks opened a folder.

“When?”

Alex’s hands tightened around the blanket.

“Last semester. Twice. Once after Jason blocked the ramp near the gym. Once after they took my charger from my wheelchair bag.”

Maria stared at the principal.

“You lost those reports?”

No one answered fast enough.

That silence was the first real confession.

Then Principal Harris’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

It was the district superintendent.

Somebody had already sent the video higher than the school office.

And the consequences were no longer staying inside Westbrook High.
