Chapter 62 - Another Blank Page

Late Friday evening, the robotics lab finally emptied.

The machines fell silent.

The lights above the workbenches dimmed one by one.

Alex remained alone for a few extra minutes.

He opened the notebook Dr. Ortiz had given him months earlier.

Many once-blank pages were now filled.

Ideas.

Sketches.

Feedback.

Questions.

Lessons from mentors.

Comments from community members.

Even the note from the freshman thanking him for making school feel less intimidating rested between two pages.

He turned to the next blank sheet.

For several moments, he simply looked at it.

No deadline.

No competition.

No expectation.

Only possibility.

He wrote one sentence across the top.

The next project should begin with listening.

He closed the notebook just as Coach Daniels returned to lock the room.

"Still working?"

Alex smiled.

"Thinking."

Coach glanced toward the whiteboard covered with unfinished concepts.

"I've noticed something."

"What?"

"You don't seem to chase awards anymore."

Alex looked around the workshop.

The tools.

The prototypes.

The students' ideas pinned across the wall.

"I think awards celebrate something that's already finished."

"And?"

"I'm more interested in what's unfinished."

Coach Daniels nodded slowly.

"Good."

Outside, the evening air had turned cool.

Alex wheeled toward the parking lot as the lights inside the robotics lab faded behind him.

His phone vibrated once more.

A message from Dr. Ortiz appeared.

We've just confirmed participants from twelve additional states for the National Student Innovation Summit. Several schools have asked if Westbrook students would be willing to lead collaborative design sessions. We'll discuss details next week.

Alex smiled, slipped the phone into his backpack, and continued toward the exit.

The path ahead was still unwritten.

And that was exactly what made it worth exploring.
