Chapter 70 - New Doors Open

The final afternoon of the summit focused on networking rather than presentations.

University researchers, nonprofit organizations, hospitals, technology companies, and community groups gathered inside one large exhibition hall.

Students wandered between conversations carrying notebooks already overflowing with ideas.

Alex met rehabilitation physicians interested in adaptive mobility research.

Emma discussed user-interface design with accessibility software developers.

Ryan spent nearly an hour speaking with transportation engineers about public infrastructure.

Every conversation opened another possibility.

Professor Chen eventually gathered the Westbrook team near the university exhibit.

"I have something to show you."

She introduced them to representatives from a national foundation supporting student innovation.

The foundation planned to fund collaborative community engineering projects led by high school students.

Not individual inventions.

Ongoing partnerships.

One representative reviewed the statewide accessibility network Alex and his friends had helped build.

"We've been following your work."

Alex looked surprised.

"Our work?"

She nodded.

"The technology is impressive."

She smiled.

"But what caught our attention was the way students from different schools began helping one another."

Coach Daniels quietly stepped back, allowing the students to lead the conversation themselves.

By evening, the convention center slowly emptied.

Teams packed prototypes.

Exchanged contact information.

Promised future collaborations.

Before boarding the bus home, Alex walked once more through the now-quiet exhibition hall.

Many booths had already been dismantled.

Only a few signs remained.

One banner near the exit caught his attention.

It read:

Innovation Doesn't End When The Event Ends.

Alex smiled.

He opened the notebook Dr. Ortiz had given him months earlier and turned to a fresh page.

Without hesitation, he wrote:

Project 17 — Community Mobility Initiative

He had no complete design.

No finished blueprint.

Only a collection of questions gathered from hundreds of conversations over the past week.

As he closed the notebook, Emma called from outside.

"The bus is leaving."

Alex slipped the notebook into his backpack and followed the others toward the exit.

Behind him, the convention center lights gradually dimmed.

Ahead, new communities, new collaborators, and new engineering challenges were already waiting to be discovered.
