Chapter 24 - The First Real Changes
One week after the investigation began, Westbrook High looked noticeably different.
Bright blue signs now marked every accessible entrance.
Maintenance crews inspected automatic doors before students arrived each morning.
Hallway supervision doubled during class changes, and counselors rotated through the cafeteria instead of remaining inside their offices.
None of the changes erased what had happened.
But they demonstrated something important.
The adults were no longer waiting for another incident before acting.
Alex noticed the difference immediately.
For the first time in years, he reached every classroom without needing to ask someone to move backpacks, chairs, or carts blocking the accessible routes.
Small obstacles that had once become daily frustrations quietly disappeared.
Emma smiled as they crossed the science hallway.
"It feels different."
Alex nodded.
"It feels... intentional."
Later that afternoon, Superintendent Grant visited the robotics lab again.
This time she wasn't carrying investigation files.
She carried architectural drawings.
"We're reviewing accessibility across every campus," she explained.
"We'd like student feedback before approving the renovations."
Alex studied the plans carefully.
Several ramps were correctly positioned.
Others would create unnecessary detours.
He pointed to one drawing.
"This entrance looks accessible."
Grant nodded.
"It is."
"It also forces wheelchair users to travel almost twice as far as everyone else."
Grant looked again.
She hadn't noticed.
Neither had the architects.
Emma quietly laughed.
"That's why you asked students."
Grant smiled.
"Exactly."
For the first time, Alex felt his experience wasn't simply being acknowledged.
It was becoming part of the solution.
Before leaving, Grant paused beside the doorway.
"We've also scheduled meetings with several former students."
Alex immediately thought of Ethan.
He wondered whether he would actually come.
